Preperation for Your Hospital Admission

If you are being admitted as an in-patient (staying at least one night in hospital):

  • Any medicines or tablets you are taking (in their original boxes or containers),including homeopathic medicines, vitamins and herbal remedies so staff know what you are taking
  • Any relevant x-rays still in your possession
  • Pyjamas or a nightdress
  • Dressing gown and slippers
  • Daywear – tracksuit or comfortable clothes
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Soap and deodorant
  • Hairbrush or comb and small mirror
  • Shaving equipment (if appropriate)
  • Sanitary products such as tampons (if appropriate)
  • A book or magazines
  • Spectacles and hearing-aid batteries, if you need them
  • Small change for newspapers or the bedside TV and phone
  • Underwear
  • Bath towel, flannel or sponge and wet-wipes
  • Tissues
  • Bottle of squash (if wanted)
  • Any walking aids you may already have (frame, stick, crutches) if you need them.


If you are being admitted as a day-case procedure (going home after surgery on the same day):

  • Any drugs and medicines you are currently taking in their original container
  • Any relevant x-rays still in your possession
  • Nightwear and personal toiletries are optional although slippers are advised.


Please don’t bring:

  • Large amounts of money or credit cards
  • Valuables such as jewellery
  • A TV or radio
  • Alcohol
  • A hairdryer
